Sub Branch History
It appears as if the Wondai Sub-Branch had been well established by 11th November 1927 when the Digger’s Room at Wondai Memorial Hall was unofficially opened. Between that date and when next observed in 1934, the Sub-Branch was under the charge of Mr E J Phillips, chairman overseeing fairly routine meetings organising reunion dinners, dances, Anzac Day, and attending to the needs of Digger’s who sought pensions and other types of relief.
In 1940 a new hall was opened on the site of the original hall (shown above) which offered much more room for meetings and in which was situated a memorial plaque and the Honour Boards.
Membership of the Sub-Branch has always been in the vicinity of 60 odd throughout its life. In 1947 a Women’s Auxiliary was formed to support the Sub-Branch through a wide range of fund raising activities and catering for various functions.
By August 1952 the Sub-Branch was in new premises on the existing site. The Honour Boards were shifted from the Memorial Hall to the new club in 1969.
Many very able men have held positions of note during the long life of the Sub-Branch beginning with the first President Arthur Grevell who had seen service in both the Boer War and WW1 through to the current President Neil Burrows who has received the RSL Meritorious Service Medal.
